you'll need another 6 series parts car because I think the ECUs are different, plus you'll need the clutch pedal, clutch cylinder, flywheel, clutch, the transmission, hydraulic lines and various springs, fasteners, etc. I think the wiring harnesses are different too. This is not a job for a rookie mechanic or some bozo grease monkey that thinks he's a mechanic. I'm not even sure a dealer could do this. Anyway your looking at a labor cost of $650+. Not to mention parts. Autos aren't cheap to fix either. Yes, the 6 series is a cool car. I myself would like to own one someday, but this one you are discribing sounds like an expensive problem. But if you have the know-how, parts, can do it yourself, and don't mind being with out a car for a few months go for it! Otherwise find a cool 325 and mess around with it.

im doing the same swap to my car right now. find a parts car. it will make for many less headaches. and it will be cheaper. the higher the first digit of your model, the more expencive parts are gonna be (3=cheapest, 7=most expencive).

Chuck,

Congratulations on a car that made the Automobile magazine's top 100 hottest cars list!
I am guessing you are a young fellow without a ton of experience.First I would learn as much as possible about the process & hire an independant BMW mechanic.
One of the best online resources for these cars is http://mye28.com/ while your car is not a five series of that era,it does share the same chasis. The transmission you seek can be found on that websight.A few members have performed this operation & posted pics etc on their individual websights. The transmission is a Getrag 260 or 265.
The car will be much improved with the manual gearbox,as nature intended.Softwear should not pose an issue.
Good luck & post your questions/needs on the other board.
