Need some input on AWD. Does the 3 series AWD provide an appreciable difference in handling road conditions? I live in the northeast and have had AWD on other, lesser nameplates that I've owned and have had mixed feelings on the value...curious what bimmer pros think. Thanks.

The 3 series BMW AWD version isn't the best in class, but owners seem to report satisfaction with it. I have no personal experience with them though since I live in California.

I just leased a 325xiT wagon which has AWD. The information I got and the research I did, was that the AWD gives better handling than the RWD in bad weather. In dry conditions there is not much difference.

This car replaced a Subaru Outback wagon with AWD so I was looking for an AWD vehicle.

I haven't had any real bad weather yet (I'm in CT) but I have been on some wet/slick roads and I think the car has handled very well.

i just bought an 88ix & LOVE it. i havent had bad weather yet either but have had some "spirtited" moments in the mountains. i have yet to break it loose or feel no confidence in the car. i cant wait for some snow so i can go play in an empty parking lot.

i know my awd system is 16yrs older than what u r looking at.. but there is no way it would have gotten worse.

BMW AWD = 62% rear/38% front. System is called xDrive. Some what capable system but mainly designed to maintain RWD feel. All xi's are about and inch higher. Subaru AWD is more true AWD.

the first gen xi had the first gen xDrive, which i think was derived from the x5's system, where the split was fixed 62 rear, 38 front.

when they came out w/ the x3, they revised the xDrive so torque wouldn't be fixed at 38/62 split. the torque could be delivered to the wheel w/ most traction, or something like that, and the x5 starting 04 has that system.

anyway, i heard that they'll be phasing out the xi in favor of the x3. or was it just the XiT?

either way, if you want a awd ride, audi has one of the best awd systems. but test drive teh xi, the quatro, and maybe even the saab 9-2 among other rides before deciding. how much are you looking to spend?

Actually the new x-drive (on the new x3) can provide 100% of the power to ONE single wheel. I'll find you all the link tomorrow, i'm really tired...hehe

While AWD is definitely safer and in driving up to 8/10ths of the car's capability there is no discernible difference in the handling it is in the last 2/10ths where the AWD loses out to the RWD. It's the inherent understeer (and extra weight) which robs it of challenging the handling dynamics of a rear-driver.

Go RWD every time.
