If I understand correctly SMG is just a regular manual transmission with some additional electronics and hydraulics. So is it as reliable as the regular manual gearbox? Any additional maintenance involved?

The same question has been asked all over the place. To be quite honest, I don't think anyone knows for sure yet. It's only been a bit over two years since SMGII came out (although SMGI was introduced in Europe in the late 90s), and nobody has used SMGII long enough to put its reliability to the test. Theoretically speaking, SMGII should require less maintenance than 6MT because the computer should be able to make the optimal use of the clutch and transmission, but who knows...
