a) Every once in a while, after about fourty minutes of driving I'd estimate, a *ding* goes off in my car. It's a '93 318is, and I service it myself. Related?

b) There's a little red light in the center of the console. It stays on all the time. What is this, and is there a way to shut it off?

c) Do any of you have knowledge of manuals/books that are used in mechanic education? I'd like one for every topic, but especially engines and autobody/paint. On the same topic, what are the most reputed auto-schools?

Thanks!

check your speed when it goes off. is it always when you hit a certain speed cause it should be your computer. i think you can turn it off. you might need to buy a car manual from the dealership. i got one for about 15 dollars new

Your clock could be set to "chime" on the hour and/or on the half hour? At least my 7 will do that along with the other mentioned settings: temp, speed.

I do not know about the red light. Do you have an alarm?

Hiya,
Does the red light start flashing when the chime sounds? If so its your on-board computer telling you you've past the speed limit preset by the user. Normaly the red light is solid until you pass the limit.
Otherwise it could be your clock chiming in (which you can turn off), i still reckon the red light is the one for the "limit" function...is the light on the buttons of the computer or near the gear stick?
