I have decide to replace my Gran Prix with a 5 series BMW. I can spend around $20K. I'd love a M5(wouldn't we all?) but obviously I can't afford it so I am looking for a 530i or 540i with sport suspension. Probably a 2000-2002 model.
My question is do 540i models come with sport suspension or is it an option? Is there any differences between the 2000- 2002 models.
Any other general advice for somebody on my quest?

Thank you,

Mike

PS: I live in the Chicago area if you have one for sale.

Mike welcome to the board!

Sport suspension was an option on the 540 models, regarding the e39's, "The six cylinder cars use rack and pinion steering but this won't fit the V8's which use a less direct recirculating ball system. The six cylinder cars are considered to handle better than the eights due to the steering difference and lighter weight. All models have around 50/50 weight distribution although the V8s are a little front heavy." (from the John G. Burn's Homepage ) Hope this helps some.

Thanks guys, this is exciting! I just found a 2003 model that is, of course, higher than my price range, but I am going to look at it anyway [:D]
It claims to have the sport suspension and the picture shows the 18" wheels which are a 5 spoke type, maybe called parallel spokes? They are the coolest one in my opinion and the only ones I want.
Question: how do I know it is a sport model for sure? Could somebody put some used 18" wheels on and say it is?
Edmunds.com says: "a new sport package that includes 18-inch wheels, a revised sport suspension, front and rear spoilers, visible exhaust outlets, black side molding, a black headliner, titanium-ringed gauges and an M footrest for the driver."
This one I am looking at doesn't seem to have a rear spoiler. I know Edmunds isn't the official answer on BMWs so I am asking here. This one also has only one exhaust outlet. Isn't there usually 2?

Thanks,

MIKE

I have a 325i presently, and also have been looking for about the same upgrade as you. The 540i is an awesome, terrific package. My tech says that the 98/99 vintage with sport package and 6 speed is the absolute best set-up for a BMW of this ilk that was ever made. I really wish I could come across a good one...best luck to ya.
