Extended Warranty is it worth it?

I have 100 miles to go until I hit 50K. I was trying to decide if paying $2200 for the 2 year/50,000 (2yrs will come way before 50,000 miles) mile extended warranty is worth it?

I purchased the maintenance because I can justify that (breaks, windshield wipers, service will pay for itself). However, how reliable are BMW's? I know its hard to predict but it is more likely or less likely for something major to happen to a BMW after 50,000 miles? I would hate to waist the money. I know repairs are expensive but I would rather pay as I go if nothing will happen in two years.

Thanks in advance.

One never knows what is going to break, or need replacing. My aunt bought a beautiful 1995 540i in 1996. It was still under original factory warranty when she bought it, and purchased the extended warranty offered at the dealership. There were repairs here and there during the factory period, but she was so lucky to have purchased the extended. In 3 years of the extended warranty she had $10,000 worth of repairs, including a new transmission at 60k miles.

In our past experience an extended warranty on a German, Italian or Swedish car is always a good idea. My 2 cents.

wow, a new trans. Funny the guy at the dealership mentioned "you never know your transmission could go." You're right, never know. I think I will just get it, afterall seems like something is bound to go. I hope bmw's last long without too many major issues.. thanks for the response.

This depends on how much you drive and the wear & tear you put on your car. What year is it? Since I don't put that many miles on mine, I opted not to purchase the extra warranty even though it covers the cost of replacing your brakes.

Funny you asked. My warranty expired last July and I have 59k miles now. Before I reached 50k miles, I had everything that could be replaced under warranty done with the help of my SA. I planned on doing the brakes, oil changes and coolant flushes myself at the proper interval after the warranty expires, so I opted not to purchase the extended maintenance warranty.

Sure enough at around 56k miles, I started losing about a pint of coolant every 2-3 weeks, and finally the radiator light went on last Saturday. I brought my car in to the dealer today and I now have a bill for $1300: water pump, thermostat, and belts. I took a gamble and I lost - the warranty would have been about $1000.

I'm not saying the same thing is going to happen to your car but if you are planning on keeping the car after the warranty, I would recommend you purchase the extension unless you are willing to spend the time and effort to work on the car yourself. Good luck!

wow, sorry to hear that. That sucks. That is too bad that happened..

I finally got lucky for a change (if you call lucky spending a bunch of money to extend a warranty and having something actually need to be fixed).. I went ahead and paid for both the warranty and maintenance, and low and behold at 50,100 miles (I paid for warranty and maint. at 49,800) I noticed my breaks were grinding. I needed front brake pads and rotors (previously had front pads changed at 27,000). That alone almost made it worth it.

Good luck to you in the future as well. hope nothing else needs to be fixed.

Should have taken it a reputable private, non-$tealer BMW shop.

A 3 series is usually reliable if you treat it well... The BMW 7 series isn't exactly a reliable car... I know I would have reservations purchasing a used 7-series. Then again I don't like buying used sports/luxury cars anyway, simply because you never know what the previous owner put it through...
