I am thinking of buying a 5 series BMW. Thinking of a 2001 or 2002 530iA. Drive a Passat now. I'm worried about driving in winter conditions. Would like to hear from others. Also concerned about expensive repairs. Convince me this is the car to buy!!

The 530i is truly a great car. Although the RWD is the worst setup for winter driving conditions, it feels great for regular driving. I understand that Canada winters are quite bad. If you purchase a set of snow tires for the winter months, and the roads in your area are decently well-maintained during snow storms, you should be able to get around just fine.

I am assuming you have a front-wheel drive Passat....how do you get by, do you run all-season tires all-year-round, or do you have snow tires for the winter? If you can get through your winters with an FWD Passat with all-season tires, then you can definitely get through them with a RWD BMW with snow tires.

Yes, I do use all season tires and the Passat is quite good in the snow. FWD.

What about frequent and costly repairs?

Thanks for your response!!

I just had the my Inspection 2 service completed and it cost me $591.00
The only problem they found on my 95 M3 was the belts were showing signs of wear and a bearing in one of my pulley's was bad. Cost to fix $291.00
The interior on my doors was loose so they re-bonded them, cost: $120.00 per door.
This is a grand total just shy of $1100.00
My car has 103k on it. The previous owner was meticulous with maintenance.
Do you realize that the car you are looking at has the same engine as mine? If I remember correctly I think that Consumer Reports rated a 2002 530 fairly high.

The decision is ultimately yours, but driving a Beemer is the most fun you can have with your clothes on. If I didn't love the car I would not be able to justify the expense.

FYI:
A Beemer = Motorcycle
A Bimmer = Automobile

Bought a 2001 330Ci last month, mounted steel rims and snows this month.

Don't plan on a lot of winter driving as we have a V70 for that, but don't want to "park it" all winter either.

I've owned 4 BMW's all driven in Canada, all year 'round.
All of 'em were wonderful in the snow... except an early 320i which had a very light rear end (sandbags in the trunk helped)
A 5 series car will perform suberbly...
As to repair costs... you must remember the quality and the price of an original 5 series Bimmer. Therfore the costs to repair aren't cheap... but you get what you pay for.
The more consistent you are at servicing it correctly wil benefit you in two ways: first, other things will less likely go wrong, and secondly you get a higher resale value down the road.
Like they say: "No one ever regretted buying quality"!

Let it Snow !!!

DSC/RSC makes it fun to drive in the snow here in B.C., Being used to driving back in Winnipeg,MB.The drive here in B.C. is nothing compare to the winters in WPG.I guess im just used to driving up to 6 months a year in the snow high or low,wet or black ice.Having power to your rides means nothing if you dont have control. My '05 320i 5Auto I-6 has all the support of the options it came with, thus the ride will be somehow un-problematic and fun to drive all year round. [headbang]

Peace!! [clap]

Yes driving in Winnipeg Manitoba is a challenge but not at all that bad, the roads are cleaned soon as the snow falls. This winter it has been a piece of cake with temps running about 0 Celsius. Having written this I have put up the BMW for winter and drive a Pontiac GTP hey lots of fun with the supercharger. Can't wait for spring to drive the BMW.
