I am having a great time with my "NEW" bimmer-- 325e 1986 but I've also got some problems.

My dash panel warning lights do not go off, no matter what I do. I've read online that there's some sort of reset tool available, but I have no idea where to find the area that needs to be reset. Also, the guy who sold me the car has lost the computer code for the keypad and I'm panic stricken that someone (one of the kids, probably) might just hit one of those keys and my car will never start again! Does anyone have any advice for me, short of a great big mechanic's bill?

Thank you!

the reset tool is for the service interval lights, not the dash warning lights. I think that the battery in the dash motherboard may be dead. What exactly do you mean by keypad? Anyway I don't think hitting a button will not let the car start.

Hello and Help!

Thanks for that insight. I'll check it out. About the keypad I mentioned: There is a console panel right above where the stick shift is that is a clock, thermometer, etc. Since it doesn't work and I'm afraid to touch it, I don't know what else it does.

thats just the on board computer. They break all the time. I wouldn't worry about it. Its just connected to some sensors. Nothing major. Push all the buttons you want. It shouldn't hurt a thing

AH Ha! Thank you for that information. I really am a newbie. Now to find a side-view mirror... the glass just fell out of mine!

Sigh.

The on-board trip computer (clock thing) can have an egine immobiliser function, but if it does, you need to know the code before you can switch it on, so unless you fluke it, you're safe, and even then it can be reset by a mechanic who works with bimmers.

The check light may be a fault somewhere (dor any of the lights on the board above the rearvision mirror stay on when driving?) or it may be a flat battery behind the instrument cluster. I had a prob with mine and replaced the battery - a fiddly, but not hard job if you or someone you know is handy with a screwdriver, but a timeconsuming and therefore prob expensive job for a mechanic. If it were me I would want to get it fixed as I like my car to be in top condition, but if you can live with it, and are sure it is not a fault with the car, then by all means...
