Hello, I am new to the forum but definately appreciating the knowledge and know-how being tossed around here. I have owned several older BMW's (1980-1992), mostly sevens. Anyway, Right now I am driving an 85 735i. It runs great while driving, however the idle is very jumpy. I have done all the standard issues that would come to mind, well mine anyway.I am by no means mechanically inclined. I replaced plugs, wires, battery, and fuel filter but doesn't seem to make much difference. I have had a few older sevens with this common thread.ANY input about this problem or the model in general would be greatly appreciated. I am just looking to soak up as much information as possible--thanks---take care---Jesse--Saratoga, NY

When idle problems occur, most people do usually check their plugs, filters etc, but the problem may be a faulty idle control valve. You may be able to clean it up and re-fit it, but in my opinion, as its not a ridiculously expensive part, you may as well get a new after market unit.

The idle control valve should be easily visible and should be easily accessible on your 735. It should look similar or like this

Just look around between the engine and the intake manifold and a couple of pipes are connected to a part that looks like or similar to that. Sorry I don't know technically where exactly it lies.
