how to learn more about my bmw

this may seem silly, but I was wondering how i can learn more about my bmw. is there a good book i can get to research what's under my hood? how can i learn to change my own oil, brakes, etc.?

Welcome to the board!

You may or may not be aware of the BMW's coding system. You own what is known as an E36. The best way to learn is to buy a Service Manual . After you get one, sit down and read a little bit at a time. After each section, go to your car and lookat the things they describe. Find all the parts that you can so you know where they are. In a short time, it will start to make sense. Then you will be more comfortable in doing an oil change, brake overhaul, etc.

You can try and buy the ETK and TIS cds off ebay - the ETK is the parts lists and the TIS is the technical information system cd. This cd tells you how to repair your car. I think I paid $25 for both cds off ebay. Has saved me several hundred dollars.

i went ahead and bought the Bentley manual as suggested. it is amazing. it's full of pics and it's well detailed. i think this will work. i'm so excited to get started! i've already made a list of improvements that need my attention! :) i'm sure the cds would work too but i'm a book girl. i ended up getting it on eBay.

The Bentley manual wasn't under the tree for me but I'm going to pick it up soon. Are those ETK and TIS CD's really that good? (Is there a manual on the CD that can be printed, or is it interactive for repairs, or?)

fyi, I have 318i Sedan 1986 (M10, E30), i really need that stuff....pls anybody can tell me how to get that stuff...pls...coz i'm outside US, living in Indonesia....
