I just bought a 1997 318is and there are a few things I would like to know. Ok the first thing is the door handle on the car seems really hard. You have to pull on it hard until you get a click then the window lowers a little. I was just wondering is it suppose to be this hard to open or is there something wrong with my door? Other thing I was wondering being a nebie and all to BMWs I was wondering how you spell beamer is it bimmer or beamer? Thanks for any help i can get and I hope to post more and lean more.

welcome! and congrats on the purchase!

i don't know about the door being hard to open, but i know about the windows. more cars have it nowadays, but the slight slide of the window was a cool feature, even is now imo. because your coupe has frameless windows, it is hard to make a perfect seal w/ the door sill. when you close the door the window slided back up into the groove to make the tighter seal. and when you open the door, the window slides down a bit to break the seal.

i posted something similar too, when i first came on board. i think it works both ways. but beamer was more for motorcycles than cars. there's a bimmer mag.. if you do a search for bimmer, that thread should pop up..

The door could be a hinge pin. With the door open lift on the outside edge and see if there is play in the hinge. If not check the striker plate and pin. The car is a Bimmer, a motorcycle is a Beemer and a dent in either is a Bummer! Welcome and enjoy!

You could be coming from a Japanese or American car. Those door handles are a lot easier to open. Hmm, come to think of it, our current Mercedes is pretty easy to open too. The old Mercedes was tougher to open.

It sounds pretty normal to me. My coupe is relatively difficult to open. Course, the door is also heavier as well as other differences from my old Civic.

Hey I'm back with some more questions. A little while ago I had some work done on my car because of an accident. I had left them my second key not the master one. Now that I have my car back I can't get the alarm to work anymore. When I push it beeps but does not lock. I held the button down until the alarm went off then I unarmed it. Then I locked it again, the doors locked but then a few seconds later the alarm went off. Any one have any idea how I can fix this? And thanks.

first try and find your maker of the alarm, the search the FAQ, it should tell you how to reset the alarm. i had to do mine on my civic once

not sure on the new problem, but just to make sure it was covered i had the same problem with the door on the 318is...its a simple fix at the BMW dealership, well they just need to lube up and maybe fix a bearing or something, they said it was a simple fix
