Is Engine Restorer any good?

I've been wondering about this product ENGINE RESTORER and also if anybody could tell me if they used it or heard from anybody tell you that its either good or just a big scam like everything else. Or if theres a product out there that you guys have used and has worked to fix your pistons to let me know about it.

If I remember that stuff is just thick heavy sludge. I personally never add stuff like that.

I did try Z-MAX because it was on sale and because my mechanical side of my brain could understand the claims from their infomercial . It has something called Lynkite ( sp ) . I used it on an older nissan truck and I could tell a difference . It ran smoother and quieter .

i haven't tried engine restorer so I couldn't give you a yea or nay.What do you mean as far as " fixing your pistons " ? The ZMAX is supposed to fill in the cracks on the cylinder wall to give a better seal with your pistons rings . So you can restore some compression and lessen blow by down the cylinder wall.

There are people who don't believe in additives and their big claims and others that swear by them . I'm mostly on the sceptical side and it takes alot for me to get behind a product . i think they're too expensive , like $50 , and they want you to add it everyother oil change..

No mechanic in a can is going to repair worn metal parts. If you thicken your oil enough it will mask the problems somewhat, but it will repair nothing. I will never use oil additives.

I totally agree with Big Daddy, no after market miracle in a can will fix or repair your problem, at best, short term it might hide it, but then it could end up being worse than before you added that can. If it was something that really worked it would make headlines and claims to fame! Just my two cents...

What I meant when I said fixing the pistons is, restoring compression, but I guess by what u guys have told me I wont even bother trying that product if its adding it at every other oil change. THanks again [headbang]

Do any of you guys remember Andy Granatelli, STP Oil Treatment, the claims they made and the false advertising lawsuit in the 80s (I think) that almost put them out of business for false advertising?

These products had some limited usefulness in the "old days" when an old engine was really sloppy, but all it does is thicken the oil, as others have said above.

They are actually BAD for today's engines - the tolerances on todays engines with 100K miles are EQUAL TO OR BETTER than a '70s engine was BRAND NEW!

The new engines are designed for lower weight oils so it adequately lubricates the tight tolerances. Thicker oil (i.e. additives) can actually INCREASE wear because it is too thick to properly coat the surfaces.

Don't use that stuff... that extra compression is from gumming of the engine... rod bearings mainly... I would never put that in an engine I cared about.

Last thing thing I knew, the makers of engine restorer had a class-action lawsuit on their hands. I heard from a mechanic I once knew that it had a tendency to clog up oil filters, and he had heard of it RUPTURING cheaper ones. So much for their "CSL" whatever the hell that is...(teflon?!)
Thats all I needed to hear to keep me away from the oil additive aisle!

Hahaha, at the end of that article, it says that the FTC had previously halted pretty much every other engine additive company I've ever heard of. That means all that stuff is crap. It's not an isolated case. They're all likely garbage.
