Ohh, like in your sig. The ones closer to the grill are halogen. They're on in the daytime if you have daytime running lights. Otherwise, just pull the turn signal stalk back towards you. That's when you flash your high beams and it uses the inner ones. Xenons aren't meant to be turned on and off rapidly which is why BMW uses the second set.

wow am i lost. what model car are we talking here? maybe i should start looking at newer ones[8]
well, I was referring to the E46 model, but I believe pretty much all BMWs work the same. I'm talking about the two headlights you have. The pair closest to the kidney grills. They're off normally and I was just explaining how to turn them on. The outer ones are your regular low beams and aren't the ones I was talking about.

oh, he was asking about high beams...i saw a pic of a bimmer with low beams, high beams, and fog lights on-all at the same time. however, my fog lights and high beams play off each other: i.e., they can't both be on at the same time-if one pair goes on, the other goes off. just wondering how one would have all 3 eluminated. maybe it was just a photo shop trick or something.[scratch]

Yeah that's what I am trying to figure out. Do you notice on some of the BMW comercials the inner lights, the ones that are closer to the kidney are on? That is what I am refering too.

But I don't want to get high beam, just have that on.

Yeah, the inner lights are just your high beams. Like I said earlier, they are also your daytime running lights. If you saw them on in a commercial, that's just a BMW with the DRL on. It's supposed to come with them on from the factory, but you can have the dealer turn them off (like I did). Some dealers just turn them off automatically before a customer requests it, usually cuz most of their customers ask for it to be turned off. If you want it on, just ask the dealer. You get one freebie where they program all the options for you. You shoulda gotten a sheet with a bunch of options listed that you can choose from.

It's either daylight running lights, or maybe angel eyes? OEM Angels can make it look like the lights are on during the day, if you don't get a good look at it (To see the lit ring, and not the entire light).

I think is the angel eyes then. i tried it today put the high beams on, but the inner lights were still off!

So I think the Day light or angel eyes, do i need to go to the dealer now to get them on?

Your E46 330i doesn't come with angel eyes unless you went the aftermarket route.

For daytime running lights, your dealer needs to turn them on if they're not on already.

Yes, what I was refering to was the angel lights, that is the correct term which i did not know.

That is correct, I was talking with several people who have bought them aftermarket. So I guess that is what I will need to do.

Sorry for the confusion, and thanks!

If you're getting angel eyes, you gotta do your homework on them. All I know for certain is that the first two to three generations were crap. They're up to Gen V right now, but not sure if Gen V is really better than Gen IV or not.

For the 2002 and later models equipped with Bi-Xenon lights, the inner lights only work as the DRL and flasher (i.e. pulling your turn signal stalk). The Bi-Xenon system incorporates both low and high beams in the outside lights. For the cars built in and before 2001, the outer lights are the Xenon (or halogen) low beam lights. The inner lights works as the high beam.
