I am in the market for either a late modes M3 or possibly a new one. Can anyone give me some feedback on the merits of SMG vs 6 speed manual.
I like to shift, but sometimes an auto might make sense.
I know the smg sounds like the best of both worlds, but it really doesn't shift like a 6 speed transmission.

thanks,
Joe

I suggest you go drive both and see what you think. Personally I have never driven an SMG, but I have heard that they are a good trans. I just enjoy the manual!
only you'll know for sure.

SMG: it somehow became a debate of old school v new school, among other things. i've never driven an smg, altho i might finally get a chance this summer. i've heard great things about smg ii (in the m3) horrible things about smg i (found in rest of the 3 series, but you won't have to worry about that.) and lots of crap being thrown around at each other by both groups.

i think i too will have to cross that smg v manual bridge someday.. hope you find what you like.

Here's my opinion...TODAY, I test drove a 05 M3 with the comp package and SMG and had the frickin thrill of my life. Never have I felt like a car would literally beg and encourage me to keep going faster and faster and before I knew it I was over 100mph. It felt like 50mph. The SMG was seamless. I had the formula 1 paddles working and then transitioned into the "auto" mode with the sport button on and as I was coming up to a red light, this beast downshifted to help slow me down and save on the brakes.

I had a 04 6 speed 330ci, and I know it doesn't compare with the M3, but to me manuals are cool, but SMG is sooo much fun!! Just get out there and test drive it with SMG!!

Around here, an SMG makes sense. Too much traffic. My friend recently bought a 6-speed M3 and while it was fun shifting (BMW makes a great manual), with the amount of traffic we have, SMG would be most welcome.

The general consensus is it is a personal preference. The subject has been bashed to death in the past with lots of technical talk aswell. You should be able to find the thread using the search function.

Joe,

First off, where in the world is Milligan? Second off, drive both but go with the SMG because you will want it when you are either sitting in traffic for hours or want to eat a sandwich on the road! Ha!

I can not even begin to describe how much I LOVE the SMG. As many on here will agree, it takes at least 3-4 weeks to "learn" how the transmission works, and to get a good feel and appreciation. The shifts are lightning fast, the hill hold feature (gradient assist) is amazing...and I love the settings regarding more passive or aggressive driving...and the Sport button, and, and, and..........

I know BMW makes the best manual tranny, probably better than Porsche....but the SMG gives you the best of a 6 speed manual and a 6 speed Steptronic [burnout]
