i just got a new 1991 318i 5 speed, and was wondering what the best mods to do for the first ones are. i was thinking maybe an exhaust, short shift kit, intake or chip, and definately suspension, anyone got any suggestions on what i should use for the above and what brands i should use. thanks dudes.

Welcome to the board!

JC makes the best chip for your car and the M42 motor. I would suggest a CAI and chip together, than exhaust.
The 318is actually has the M42B18. The 318i comes with the M40.

In terms of tuning an M40, you're not really going to get all that much from it with a chip, exhaust, and cold air intake. Sure, it will improve on the standard performance (a chip should raise the redline to a ridiculous 7,000RPM...), but you'd be better of tuning an M20 with similar mods.

That said, the mods outlined by Big D will surely enhance the grin-factor. Good luck.
