Hi,
I'm the proud new owner of a 97 328is. I've got my check engine light on as a result of starting the car with the gas cap off while fueling. I was considering buying one of the OBD reader/reset tools, because from what I read this seems to be a frequent occurrence on these cars and I hate going to a dealer. I've seen the ones from Peake Research, but was wondering if I can just get one from Autozone/Advance/Napa/etc. From the description on the box it says that they will work on all cars 1996 and newer, regardless of make. They are about $50 cheaper than the one from Peake. Basically I just want to make sure that it will turn off the check engine light and the oil service light because I hear that turns on if you change your own oil. Also, my airbag light is on, so do i need to get the seperate reset tool from Peake to have that turned off as well? Is there one reader that will do everything?
Thanks!

I have the Peake OBD reader. I can't say for sure, but the Autozone generic units may not (?) have the correct EXTENDED CODES. Basically, the OBD standard specifies two types of codes - standard and extended. The standard codes are the same for ALL vehicles, but the extended codes are manufacturer specific. If it does not support BMW extended codes, it's not a good buy, it could be telling you totally wrong information for extended codes.

Unfortunately, the airbag reset is a separate tool...at least from Peake.
