I just purchased a 97 540i w/45K mi and love it. Does anyone know what would cause a vibration between 1000 and 3000 rpms? No vibrations when idling and no vibration after 3000 rpms. It seems like it doesn't want me to be a wimp and just "put the pedal to the metal".

Thanks,
Vaughn [bmwkick]

Yes congrats and welcome! I agree with Scott, check the rims for a bent one, you might have your drive line bearings checked too. I had one go bad on my 750iL. Could really feel it at 3-4k rpm and when pulling hard.

Thanks for the warm welcome. The vibration does occur slightly while driving, but I can feel it when just sitting still with the vehicle in park or neutral. Could it be bad spark plugs or wires?

Thanks again for the feedback...

Are you sure it's not just the delivery of the power from the M62 V8??

My dad's 740il runs just beautifully but from about 2-3,000 RPM the engine doesn't so much vibrate as sort of 'pulsate' the car. It's hard to explain but I get the feeling that this is what you mean by the vibration. I think it's just the way that this magnificent engine delivers it's stuff - you literally feel the engine pouring on the power. If you're worried then check it into a BMW service station or a VERY trusted mechanic and have them run it over for you. Could be some worn engine mounts perhaps.

But I really think it's just the nature of the engine... Congrats on the purchase.

I've heard it is natural for the V8 and maybe others to have a "limp" at certain rpms. You may want to check if someone put a lightweight flywheel and/or pulleys on it. That may cause problems since they act as a harmonic dampeners in concert with the crankshaft. That could easily be the problem if it was replaced with non-stock (from what I understand).
