Touch up Paint

Hey guys,

I went by the local BMW dealer yesterday to see about getting some touch up paint for my car. The guy at the parts counter told me he would probably normally be able to get me touch up paint for my '87, but right now he can't get any paint at all because of some changes in federal regulations concerning how the paint is packaged and shipped. He said because of these regulatory changes, all paint is on "backorder." He told me to call back once a month to ask if they are able to order touch up paint again. Anyone else heard anything about this? Seems kinda fishy to me. I can't imagine that if someone gets a stone chip on the hood of their new 745Li that the dealer is going to tell them, "Sorry, we can't get touch up paint for your brand new 745 since it's all on backorder, and we have no idea when we can get more. Your hood will just have to rust." Right. I don't buy it.

So, where else can I get touch up paint in BMW colors from? The local autoparts stores and Wal Mart didn't have any colors that came close. I have a Delphin Grey '87 325.

Thanks!

Yeah, the BMW touch up paint has been on back order for a while now. A recall was even issued I believe.

Check out AutoVisuals, they have almost all formulations that they can load into a pen for you. If you do order, remember to get extra tips. Once used and stored, the tips clog up with dried paint, then you have to replace the tip before using the pen again.

I have ordered one, but I haven't used it yet. Hopefully it won't dry up! I would suggest getting the clearcoat pen if your paint is metallic. Also, you may want to check out this product...

Langka

And yes, I ordered it, but haven't tried it yet! [;)]

Update - the touch up paint is now available and no longer on indefinite backorder. I ordered the paint in my color at the dealer today. I think he said it will be $18.
Hmmm! Is that a paint pen, or spray paint can, container, or....?

You know, I'm not sure. I'll let ya know when it comes in.
Please do, I'd take a stab at painting the hamann eyelids I have by myself if it's a spray can that you can order. or even a container of it that I could toss into my little spray painter.

Just picked up the touch up paint today. It's two little bottles with a brush in them just like the little bottles of touch up you buy at WalMart, so it definitely won't work for painting your hamann eyelids.

Darn.. Sounds great for filling in minor nicks and scratches though. Was it $20 and you got 2 bottles, or $10 each? I could do with a few 'fillings' for the car here and there from stone chips, etc.

It came to a total of $16.95 with tax and includes a bottle of basecoat and a bottle of clearcoat. I'm going to do some touchups on the car this weekend and will let you know how it goes.

How did it come out jrt67ss350? I am thinking about getting a bottle from my dealer to fixed the paint chips on my 330...

I did this on my silver car last summer. Silver paint with clearcoat in seperate bottles. Don't use the brush in the bottle--it's way too big. Buy some small pointed-tip brushes from an art supply store. It takes a while to layer the color coat on.

Lanke worked OK but I found it a little difficult to smooth it off after applying the paint/Lanke mixture. It didn't require multiple layers like the paint-only technique.

Neither technique looked like an undamaged surface but it was much better than the chip. I guess with the metalic paint it's hard to get a perfect blend.

touc up paint source

I have bought for a number of cars now, paint from paintscratch.com. You send them paint code from your car, and you get perfect match. You can buy in 1 ounce bottles with brush in cap. Get basecoat and clearcoat for about $20.
