Tracking your car...

Hey guys~
I visited another BMW X3 forum (http://bimmer.roadfly.org/bmw/forums/e83/) and found this information so I figured that I could post it here...

"There is a better way to track the factory production and shipment of your new X3. Most of us check online using the bmwusa website and owner's circle. But most of us know and have read posts on this message board testifying to just how inaccurate the website info can be. It's not a bad system. It's just not good enough for those of us waiting anxiously for our new X3's to arrive at our doorstep! Here's a more accurate way:

1. Dial a special BMW toll-free Phone #: 1.800.831.1117
2. Wait out the first set of voice recordings. This first set will tell you BMW offices are closed or not closed, depending on when you call. Do nothing until the second set of voice prompts begins.
3. The second set of voice prompts will give you options. The voice will prompt you to say "vehicle production status". Go ahead and say "vehicle production status" into the phone.
4. The voice will then ask you for your production # or VIN #. "Say" either one into the phone.
5. The voice will tell you to wait: it will then "read" to you the latest info contained in their tracking system.

My OC on the web says as of today: "Vehicle produced not shipped".

This BMW toll-free phone site said days ago my vehicle was at the port, and as of yesterday says my vehicle is "in transit", which I think means on the ship headed to America.

I tried the toll free # in your post, and it says that my vehiclw is at the port awaiting a shipping vessel. OC says enroute, while the shipping company says it unloaded it at Charleston on Saturday. Not sure which one is right, but needless to say I'm hoping its the shipping company...

Oh, then I would think that the shipping company is more updated. The BMW representative that talked to me said that, because shipping is done by a private BMW affiliated shipping company, the BMW headquarters cannot determine the status of your car while it's on the boat. When your car gets to the prep center, I would think that the information from the BMW will be updated.
Congratulations~ =)

I have been tracking my car since Dec 29 03'. I can honestly say at this point that the next time I order my car I won't be tracking it. It's cool at first but for the most part things are not updated in real time so there is usually a 0-7 day lag in info. My car as been sitting at a port in Jersey since Tues and the W&W website states that my car is still on the boat! The automated BMWNA call center still says that my car is at the point of origin (Germany) and is awaiting a ship! The BMW Owner's circle website still says that my car is "In Transit". Bottom line is don't expect too much...

I really think that if they offer a way to track an order they should supply the resources to accommodate real time updates or don't offer the service at all. Just my .02

I have to agree with you on the real time tracking. Call center just this morning finally said In transit, after my salesman called yesterday to say it was at the port in South Carolina and should be in New Orleans next Wednesday. Given the technology these days, I find the delays and misinformation a bit hard to believe. Should be pretty simple to use bar codes to scan and track where the vehicle is. Much less BMW updating they're computer system every other day or so...

Anyway, I stopped checking. Just seems to make the wait longer without any reliable data.

Hey I know how you all feel. When I ordered my BMW, I checked teh site every day for 6 weeks. Excruciating. However, in my case, the site on the OC was dead on every time.
In fact my "Estimated Delivery Date" posted on the web was exact! The waititng is indeed the hardest part but the day you go to the dealer and see your car for the first time on the lot, is a very sweet day.

kscarrol...that is one sweet ride you're getting there. Let us know how it goes and post pic if you can.

According to BMW, you can no longer track shipment of your car. This is the response I received today when I asked them why I couldn't track the car on the web site:

http://www.2wglobal.com/www/WEP/Toolbox/Appl/CargoTracking/index.jsp

Thank you for contacting BMW of North America, LLC regarding the
tracking of your BMW on order. Our records show that your BMW arrived at the
port of exit on 2/16/2004. I am sorry to say that our new computer
systems do not allow for tracking after the vehicle has "reached the port
of exit.” Your BMW center has been provided the necessary access to
provide you with most current tracking information for your vehicle. May
I suggest that you speak with the Sales Department at your BMW center?
As another suggestion, perhaps your BMW has not had a chance to be
placed on a boat since it just arrived at the port of exit on Monday. You
may wish to revisit the site next week some time to see if their
information has updated.

If you have any further questions, please respond to this e-mail or
contact the Customer Relations Department at 1-800-831-1117, Monday
through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M., Eastern Standard Time.

Thank you for choosing BMW. We look forward to sharing a rewarding and
satisfying motoring partnership.

Sincerely,
Karen Labatzky

Sure, go ahead and have fun at our expense. [fake]

However, think about how well you'd maintain waiting for a brand new, rip-snorting, snarling black M3 with SMG....
[driving]

I survived a similar, but much longer, wait for my Boxster S and thought it would be a cake-walk this time. I was wrong. In some ways, waiting for an M3 is harder. [paranoid] I think it has something to do with the SMG, though. [wiggle]

thanks XIGuy, needless to say I'm pretty excited about the impending delivery. I've been driving an SUV for 10 yrs, so I'm really looking forward to criving this car.

Where on the website did you find the "estimated delivery date"? I've never come across that. And will definitely post pictures when it gets here.

Car was supposed to arrive Wednesday, but I just went by the dealership on a lark and guess what had arrived either Saturday afternoon or this morning! My 545 was sitting on the lot! The only problem is, it's Mardi Gras here in New Orleans, so the place is closed until Wednesday!!!! These last few days are going to be the longest knowing its just sitting there waiting for me...
