Trip computor in an 86 325e

I just bought an 86 325e, and it doesnt have an owners manual.
The trip computor is stuck on metric, and I would like to change it to miles. I am getting ready to change the instrument cluster, which is inop, and that is the only reason I have that it would be stuck. Someone help!

inop cluster?

you say your cluster is inop. None of the gauges working? Check all your fuses first. and yes, the operation,or lack of operation,of your cluster will affect your trip computer.
