Nothing wrong with an automatic. My Z28 with a aftermarket torque converter made many M6 guys cry. Yes, a manual is more fun to drive, but in bumper to bumper traffic......not that fun.

manual = real car, imo
auto = you are old, and this is your 3rd car
SMG and like boxes = null to the discussion because they are so elite

you = make the choice, its your car. manuals are fun and quick, and provide a true connection to the road that can absolutely not be matched by an auto.

betch my auto is quicker that your stick!

for the most part ... you are correct... I wish the 540 Sport Touring was offered in a manual... however the steptronic is "acceptable" for most applications, except for power downshift going into a turn... tends to not down shift when CLOSE to redline in the lower gear.. but chan be modified with software

Hey, for those of you who drive stick? How do you guys deal with traffic? When I first started driving stick shift (in my Jetta), I hated driving it in traffic. But now it just makes no difference, even with my G35C (much stiffer clutch).
I think the best setp is for your daily driver or your "work" car to be automatic, and have your week-end car to be manual transmission.

I have had a stick in all of my cars except for one. And I just don't feel like I am driving when I am in an automatic. It just doesn't feel right. Now for city driving, sometimes it gets a little annoying, but for those few times that I am annoyed it makes up for its self when I'm cruising along the Autobahn.

why don't you guys get a 540i with stick? i ask that because we had the choice between stick and automatic when going for the 540iT. BMW builds them so why don't you get it? i don't get it ...

Economics.

BMW crunched the numbers to import a manual 540iT (I think they may have to federalize the manual trans. version, i.e. crash test one, etc.) and decided that the extra sales they would get did not justify the expense to import it.

Most of those decisions are made by accountants, not enthusiasts.

well, last time I asked ANYONE at BMW NA ...there are no 540iT's available with the Manual transmissions... this was not available for the North American Market i.e. not imported nor created... may have been available for the european markets... but not stateside

If you live stateside... I would love documentation on the 540iT with a stick. I know of ones that have paid an arm and a leg for a conversion to a stick.... but not factory offered

Trust me ... if iT was available and for sale in the US... I would have bought iT

So... do you get iT NOW?

Um.... where were you offered a stick in a 540iT ... If this was state side... gonna have to call BS on this one

the 525 and the 528 are available in a manual transmission... but no 540iT... I am assuming, of course, you are referring to the e39 540iT

Damn europeans and their many automotive choices . . .

I doubt they lament the fact they can't get 100 different cute utes . . .

I would really like a 750 6spd. (I don't think Europe got that either, but they did get manual 732s [?] or some other 'lesser' 7).

Well if you ever get the chance to get to germany you will love all of the automotive choice's. I have seen some amazing cars since I have been in germany. And I will have the chance to bring a couple back with me to the states.

so then why the heck does your sig say you are in Location: Houston, Tx?

did you have to specifically federalize your purchase? Even If I were to have a eorupoean delivery of the 540iT... I would have to get one that was a US spec... which would have precluded me from getting the stick... WTF

Otherwise , I would have to spend 11k to federalize the European soec vehicle...No thanks... I spend the 9k to convert the 540iT to a manual here in the states...

marinakorp, i just like to confuse others. no honestly, i am german, live in germany and work for a germany comapny. the deal is, that this company has an office in houston where i am working at for this year, it is a one year assignment only.

for the 750, yes i think i remember this car to be available as a manual. i am talking about the old one, not the currecnt. i am not sure so don't nail me on that one but i'll try to find out.

AFAIK there is no 'current' 750. It is now the 760. Maybe you were talking about the E38 7 as current (1995-2001 US) and the E32 7 (1988-1994 US) as the old one?

I'd take either one with a manual trans, but then I would probably want a SWB 7, not an iL.

now iT is a little clearer to me...

for that matter... there are no 540iT's offered here, not are ther any ///M's placed on vehicles that are not a particular model (1,3,5,6,etc)... even the m540i was a canadian model
