The reason behind the head light flash vs the wave was so that you did not have to let go of the wheel. For example most of my driving time in the roadster is on curvey country roads, besides it is tradition. I am going to expermint with it and will let you know what happens.

I'm with Big Daddy on this one. I believe the lights flash is easier and more noticeable. Who knows, with the hand wave the people could mistake you for flipping them off at times. [;)]

I get more of the look "why are you driving that POS" from the newer style bimmer owners here in the bay area. But as it was said in an earlier post, most only buy the car for status, not for what it is!

I have gotten the wave on a couple of seperate occasions. About ninety percent of the time it is from somebody with a BMWCCA sticker on their car, or people driving 1991 and older cars.[hihi]

I don't mean to knock the flashing lights idea, but perhaps a wave is better?

I see so many BMWs that I would be flashing my lights on a regular basis. I sometimes do the wave or a nod to those I drive past.

Although BMW has inspired a large number of afficionados, the fact is many people who own a BMW don't care about such things and are not interested in being part of the community. To them, it is just transportation.

I wish I could afford a 65000 BMW for just transportation!!!!

My experience has been similar. Gotta love the CCA. Most of the people who see the cars as pure transportation usually have new ones or really crappy ones.

I finally got the wave! And from young people too. It was a girl about my age (well, little younger) and who I guess was her boyfriend. It was at a freeway offramp and I was in the other lane and happened to pull up right next to them. She was driving my exact car, we all noticed at the same time, grinned, waved and then took off in our separate directions. Only happened about half an hour ago. I was grinning the rest of the way home. This reaffirms my faith in young BMW drivers.

yea young bmw owners already know what's going on -- they will rule the country (hopefully) becuase if they didnt, then it would be either hicks running the country (like now) or ricers running the country [eek] [fake]

By the time they get to running the country, their ideals will be quite different than they are now.

There is a difference between a hick and a good ole' boy. W is the latter. But, the real naivete is thinking that he runs the country. In reality, the country is run by the same GOP crew that was behind the scenes in the 70s and 80s. Our foreign policy? That is the Cheney doctrine.

I gave "the wave" to someone in an E30 M3 when I had my E30. I didn't get a wave in return, but I did receive a "floor it and take off". I don't know if that was an acknowledgement of my wave, or him showing off, but I would like to think it was the earlier.

Yeah, I'd like to do the wave too, but BMWs are mainly bought for status reasons here. [?|] Plus, they're usually driven by old snobby looking people or b!tchy girls.

I wouldn't flash my brights either in CA. That's asking to be shot or at the very least, road rage. People here don't know it can mean there's a speed trap ahead and they're too dumb to realize they haven't turned their headlights on so they assume the highbeam is a rude gesture.

Same thing here in Las Vegas. Flashing lights is how gang members choose targets. There have been warnings about flashing lights. Gang members will flash lights, anyone that flashes them back becomes the new target and the goal is to kill the person. It sucks what the world has become, and here in Las Vegas I think we are well below sub-standard by most accounts.

I finally got my BMW. It's a 1995 325 with 96k miles on it, got it pretty cheap too. I was drving home (behind my dad because the seller was pretty far away from us and the only way to get there was by car and I had no idea how to drive back) after getting the car and I see this guy in a new caddilac pull up to me, I look over and he is giving me the thumbs up. Damn that felt so good, I was smiling for the next 10 minutes. I guess some people realise that a BMW is a BMW no matter how old it is. BTW I'll post the pictures as soon as I get them.

Gotta love the "waves". I had a Jeep Wrangler and the "Jeep waves" are plentiful...they have websites totally devoted to that topic. If someone doesn't wave back in a wrangler then that is total fair ground for the finger...they have all these rules about how the newer models should show respect to the older models and wave first, etc., etc. It's a really neat phenomenon. However, since I've gotten my '04 330Cic I have had NO WAVES. So disappointing...then again...maybe they are just jealous of my new ride? [:X]

A not so friendly wave

Argg.... I was driving home from work one day and noticed a bimmer had stopped behind a car to my right. It was a nice looking clean brand new silver one. When the light turned green, I just minded my own business and kept driving straight on the road. However, the bimmer that was behind to my right had sped up and just as he passed me, he "revved" his engine loud enough for me to hear it and stepped on his gas pedal to accelerate even faster. it just seem like he was trying to mock me or maybe he was just having fun with his car. He did it so blatanly that I kind of took offense to it. So as I tried to catch up to him, he had made a right turn into another part of town.

Funny thing is, we both have the same kind of car. Brand new 2004 330ci.

To have thought he would at least wave and smile to me to acknowledge that we're both on the same boat.

Sounds to me like he was having fun with you. If you both have the same car he had no better chance than you of winning a race. I think he was saying hello and nice car in his own way.[hihi]
